The MTA is taking a page out of Asia’s book and integrating a fast payment system utilizing consumer credit cards. It’s fast and painless, you just tap and go. Similar to the technology used in Korea and Japan, a consumer with a Citi PayPass card will be able to tap their card on a designated location and be on their way. This will save loads of time on those annoying lines for a Metro Card. A great idea in my opinion!
But don’t get too excited just yet. The Tap and Go project is just a pilot for now installed at all Manhattan stations on the 4, 5 and 6 lines and at four stations in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. The project is set to run for 6 months and at its conclusion the MTA will decide whether it is beneficial to implement the system citywide.
Riders using the new system cannot buy weekly and monthly passes. They do receive a standard 20 percent bonus for advance purchases over $20.
